This Alta Langa opens with a mix of lemon and orange peel mixed with baked apples, yellow flowers and pastry dough. The palate is round with a vinous note highlighting the Pinot Noir character, giving cherry and flowers and finishing with a mineral edge.
One of the palest and most perfumed Barolos from Vietti with a transparent, ruby-orange hue. This is a super nuanced, elegant, expressive and ethereal Monvigliero that grows on me, with enchanting notes of grilled grapefruit, thyme, frozen raspberries and mineral. A subtle splash of white pepper and mezcal-like smokiness. Really refined and transparent, with some citrus and mineral tensions that are closely knit with the fine, crumbled tannins. So much finesse and detail here, and its complexity will continue to unwind. Really composed, soulful and mind-blowing! An otherworldly, idiosyncratic Barolo that actually reminded me of the finest Gredo garnacha. A big wow that deserves attention. Vegan. Best with a Burgundy glass. Can drink now or from 2027.
The pale pink of the glass belies the intense aromatics and rich mouthfeel of this rosé. Wild strawberries and peach candy on the nose give way to more berries and stone fruit on the palate, with a bit of blood orange and lime and a lick of quartz on the finish.
EDITOR'S CHOICE. Timorasso is one of the most distinctive white grapes in the Italian canon, and Vietti has struck gold. Aromas of fresh and baked yellow peaches and spiced pears mix with hints of petrol, magnolia and dried mango. Wild honey, beeswax and a limestone minerality give volume, complexity and depth to this wine, finishing with fresh and lifted acidity. Drink now–2035.
Top-awarded wine from Decanter World Wine Awards - Laden with striking rose and violet florals and a zing of fresh raspberries which surge onto the beautifully ripe and juicy palate. Spicy, warm and furnished with oaky tannins which support the fleshy vibrant fruit. Outstanding!
Readers will note the addition of two new wines that have been thrilling since the first day I tasted them. The first is from a choice parcel in Cerequio Vietti acquired from Michele Chiarlo. The new Monvigliero is made in conjunction with Jeremy Seysses of Domaine Dujac and has some whole cluster influence. As much as I hope stems don't become a trend in Piedmont like French oak barrels did in the 1990s, there is little question whole clusters seem to work especially well in Monvigliero. These wines are simply brilliant. There.
The 2018 Barolo Monvigliero, another new wine in this range, is dazzling. That's not much of a surprise, as the 2018 has always been gorgeous from barrel. A touch of whole clusters adds aromatic nuance and lift to this super-classic, sculpted Barolo. The Monvigliero impresses with its purity, delineation and class. Superb.
Packaged with a green label, the Tenuta Scerscé 2019 Valtellina Superiore Sassella Nebbiolo Incanto shows fine-tuned aromas of forest berry, blue flower, wild rose and candied orange peel. This is a pure and elegant wine with a firm and silky texture. It would pair nicely with an oven-roasted chicken and potatoes.
